The Victim/Witness unit is made up of two full time advocates who work hard to ensure that victims of crimes are not left out of the follow-up or investigative process. They provide “direct services” to victims in the form of counseling, referrals to counseling programs, and help them seek restitution when appropriate. The legal system can appear daunting to victims, and our advocates help victims to understand the processes, accompany them to court, and provide them updates on their cases.
In 2013, our advocates provided 3,403 direct services to 211 separate victims. This included more than 20 elderly individuals and 8 children under the age of 17.
A large portion of the funding for the Victim/Witness Unit is provided through the State of Wyoming’s Victim’s Compensation Program.
